A special day at Ruapotaka

Ruapotaka was very fortunate to have a special St Kent's day dedicated to learning and fun. We had different activities where we practiced or learn new skills.
Here is a group playing soccer.
Another group in the music room learning and listening to music.

We had a sausage sizzle and talked to most of the students from St Kents. It was a lot of fun.

Cybersmart Comment by Liza

We have been learning how to write quality blog comments for the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

A fantastic film festival

Room 9 was very fortunate to attend the 2016 film festival. We got comfortable red seats in front of the gigantic extreme screen at Sylvia Park. It was so exciting! Sitting in our seats, it hit 1pm and the lights went dim. Who was presenting first? Mrs. Grant! Our cybersmart teacher... She was just talking about the film festival. Anyway, we watched films from Glen Innes Primary, Tamaki College and Te Kura Kaupapa Puau. Created by students and shared with the world. It was awesome to see that room 9 can create something to go on the big screen as well. Well done Ruapotaka for the awesome films!

Walking the famous red carpet. We had to take a photo near on the carpet all the famous directors and actors walk on.

Ready to watch the awesome manaiakalani films. Our big red comfortable seats. We were ready for an hour of awesome films, especially the ones created by Ruapotaka. It was great to see our friends.

An awesome display created by Mrs. Buchanan and her helpers. Right in the middle of the theater.

Learning how to write quality blog comments

Room 9 has been learning how to write quality blog comments.
Here is what one of the room 9 students learned.

It took a lot of practice but now  I have written  up to 6 quality blog comments. I have shared them with the creators of the awesome videos I watched for the film festival. It is important to write blog comments because people who share their work enjoy reading feedback and it is a way of sharing our appreciation for people sharing their learning. We write comments to tell people what they need to improve on as well.

Here is my comment I posted. Tristan.

Fun at the Botanic Gardens

Ruapotaka was very fortunate to visit the beautiful Botanic Gardens. We enjoyed a peaceful walk through the colourful garden. Different scented flowers everywhere we turned. It was a wonderful experience.

We spotted our beautiful native Pohutukawa tree in the garden. We talked about what they looked like and how they smelt and felt. We also learned that this is our native Christmas tree. Aren't we lucky?!

We admired some of the unique sculptures. This one is of a tree. There was a whole field of tree sculptures like this scattered right around the grass field.

We had to stop and take a picture under the pink cherry blossom trees. Wow they were just spectacular.

Then we stopped at the rose garden to sketch and draw our choice of a rose. It was nice a quiet so we were able to take our time drawing.

Mary-Ruths facts about polar bears

This is my presentation about polar bears. I wrote some facts about what they look like, where they live and what they do. We had a chance to change our font for our writing and be creative. My favourite fact was learning that female polar bears weigh 150 - 250 kgs. I don't know anyone who weighs that much, do you?

Ruapotaka Mini Olympics

An eventful afternoon full of learning and effort. Every spot at Ruapotaka had a fun sport happening. A lot of excited teachers and eager students.
We started with our opening ceremony just like the big Olympics. It was definitely a awesome tradition where the country who created the Olympics (Greece) led the march. The country who hosted in 2016 (Brazil) entered last.
We found out what we needed to do to make sure our Olympics went smoothly. We welcomed the lovely Ruapotaka families who came to watch us and then we went to play our sport.
Our medal ceremony went excellent. There were gold medals for two people. One person who showed excellent sportsmanship and one person who did their best.

Representing a country in the Olympics

We learned a lot about our countries that we were put in for our mini Olympics. Countries like Greece, Brazil, Turkey, Cook Islands and so on. 16 countries in total.
We split into our countries and then four countries went to either room 9, 10, 11 or 12. We coloured in our flags for our opening ceremony and we created a presentation all about our special country.
We don't usually work with the older year levels but it was an awesome time for us!
A lot of researching different things like what the meaning of our flags were, special foods from our country, special traditions, different languages and many other things.

Are you using expression too?

Spirit Animals have been working on performing their play with expression. We have learned that to show we can act as a character we need to try our best to express how they may feel and act. It makes our play interesting and the audience becomes more excited about the performance. Our question to you... Are you using expression?

Our Blooming Garden

We learned that when were planting we need a good place to put soil and attract sunlight. We also practiced nurturing our garden by watering it everyday and removing any weeds. We are taking care of our garden in teams so that we all get a turn. Working as a team makes it faster for us to nurture our garden.

Did you hear about our zoooooooo trip?

We had an awesome day full of learning and excitement. We got to see a lot of animals including, elephants, tigers, lions, red pandas and other interesting animals. We learned that hippos are very good swimmers and can hold their breath under water for a very very long time. We've been learning a lot in class about the different animals so seeing them face to face made learning more exciting.

We have learned how to hit a ball straight and towards a target as well as using different techniques to have our ball jump over objects. Hopefully we can play snag golf again. Creating a Strong Password by Tupou and Riianna

I have been learning how to make a secure password. I learnt that qwerty is not a secure password and also personal information about you is obvious to guess. My top tip to create a strong password you should use letters from phrases, song lyrics and poems to help remember. You could also use capital letters and lowercase. by Riiana

I love to read poison apple books by Riiana

IMG_5705.JPG
Hola, Malo Lelei & Talofa Lava,
My name is Riiana and I am 9 years old. I am a year 5 student in Room 9 at Ruapotaka Primary School. My teacher’s name is Miss Misela. I am half Maori and half Samoan. I have two brothers and no sisters. I am the second oldest in my family and also the most behaved.

My favourite subjects in school are cybersmart and writing. My goal for cybersmart and writing is to complete all of my unfinished work. I am good at writing and I want to improve on my multiplication especially my 6,7,8 and 9 times tables. My favourite sport is soccer. My favourite food is ice cream like boysenberry or orange chocolate chip. My favourite band is Imagine Dragons and my favourite song of theirs is Demons.

My family owned a big, black dog when I was 2 years old but we gave her away to one of my aunties because I kept on pulling on her tail.

I love watching anime and hanging out in my room by myself. I love to read poison apple books and Thea Stilton books when I get bored.

Information Report about Kain

In room 9 we have been learning how to write an information report. This is written by Kain about his family.

We are learning to create a positive digital footprint.

We often share personal information when we are online. The people we share with could be our friends and family or people we don't know. We need to make smart decisions about what personal information we share online.

Are You Making Healthy Choices?

Our senior syndicate was very fortunate to have Doctor Sandhya and Faye talk to us about making healthy choices. We learned about what kind of food is nutritious and packed with energy and then what food is unhealthy and harmful for our bodies. It was an excellent learning experience because it helps us be more aware of the food we eat everyday. We were also very lucky to have a healthy meal prepared for us. Thank you to students at NZMA for preparing a nutritious and delicious meal!

Auckland Museum Trip

To extend what we've learned about ANZAC day and to commemorate the soldiers who served, rooms 9 and 10 were very fortunate to visit the Auckland Museum. We saw the names of the New Zealand soldiers who fought in war, the resources they used during war, letters soldiers had written to their families and many other significant artifacts. We were really lucky to see first hand what they used and also learn more about the heroic stories of Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

Here is a compilation of photos from our memorable day.

Poppy Art

To commemorate ANZAC day coming soon we have created our own poppies with different patterns on the inside. These poppies are significant because after WW1 ended the first flowers to grow on the fields of war were poppies. Here are a few of the poppies painted by some of room 9 students.
